Peace Bridge Aesthetic Feature Lighting
Frey Electric installed a $1.2 million LED lighting system to turn the Peace Bridge into a spectacular iconic presence along the Niagara River. Over 630 LED light fixtures were installed under the bridge deck, within the trusses and on the piers. The LED light fixtures adhere to the environmental Black Light Policy that mandates guidelines for structural lighting features. Instead of flooding high wattage lights up into the night sky, the bridge is wrapped in vibrant colors. Other than being aesthetically pleasing, the energy and operating costs will be much lower. There will also be reduced maintenance costs and built in security features, as the entire bridge will be bathed in light. Indirect lighting is used to illuminate the upper bridge's truss beams. The previous floodlight lighting system cost $48,000 a year. The new LED system will cost about $15,000 a year. The LED lights have a lamplife of 60,000 hours, at which time they degrade to about 70 percent of original intensity. On a 12 hour cycle, that translates into a life of about 13 years.
